Hurtrude Stein

Hurtrude Stein

Minnesota RollerGirls

Hurtrude Stein discovered Roller Derby in 2010. She tried out for the Minnesota RollerGirls on a whim and has skated with them ever since, joining the All-Star team in 2011 and captaining in 2013. A life long skater, she learned to ice skate at 3 years old and grew up playing competitive ice hockey in Minnesota, USA. She has a great passion for defense and her particular brand of roller derby is heavily influenced by her time as a hockey player and a few formative years playing high school rugby. She loves to pivot and can’t wait to share everything she knows with you! Derby Fest will be Stein’s first visit to Australia and she’s excited to exchange the frozen tundra of Saint Paul, Minnesota, for the Gold Coast this January!

Sausarge Rolls

Sausarge Rolls

Wizards Of Aus

Sausarge Rolls has been on skates for more than two decades. He started his career playing ice hockey & competed at the highest levels for 12 years until he found Roller Derby. In 5 years Sarge has gone from coaching his local league in Tasmania (DSDL) to coaching Victorian All-Stars (VRDL).

Sarge is a primary jammer and Co-Captain of the 2016 Wizards of AUS National team and was Voted the Best Jammer of the 2016 World Cup in Calgary Canada. He is non-stop & wants to share his training methods with skaters who want to take their game to the next level. Sarge strongly believes that there will always be someone with more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for someone to train harder or smarter.

Bianca & Bicepsual

Bianca & Bicepsual

Victorian Roller Derby League

Bianca and Bicepsual have been blocking buddies since their time on the VRDL Queen Bees and have spent the past 3 seasons destroying jammers’ souls together on the VRDL All Stars. They both have circus backgrounds and got to know each other in 2010 when Bianca filled in for an injured Bicepsual in a circus show. Somehow that led to Biancateaching Bicepsual how to roller skate, and them dating. The latter was a bad idea, and they decided to focus their partnership on jammer killing instead

Bianca and Bicepsual have taken it in turns winning their team’s MVP award at the Big O over the past couple of years, and have played together against the world’s best at WFTDA Playoffs and Championships. They are known for their fierce commitment to defense and sharp defensive team work. They are super excited to be coming back to Derby Fest in 2017 as coaches and are looking forward to helping you all tighten up your partner blocking and 2 wall skills!

Jes Rivas

Jes Rivas

Rose City Rollers

Over the 8 years she’s played roller derby, Rivas has remained insatiable in her study of the sport, inspired by the perpetual pursuit of athletic and strategic perfection. This journey has provided her the opportunity to skate with the Denver Roller Dolls, the Rose City Rollers, and Team USA, where, together with her incredible teammates, she’s earned a bronze, two silver medals and a gold medal at WFTDA International Championship tournaments, and a gold medal from the 2015 Woman’s Roller Derby World Cup.

A lifelong athlete, and registered yoga instructor, Rivas has a strong focus on body mechanics, and her coaching focuses on where movements and power begin in the body, and the form deployed in different moves and plays.

Briktator

Briktator

Arch Rival

With a background in ice hockey, figure skating, and soccer, Bricktator transferred her footwork and hitting skills to the track in 2012 when she started playing with Bay Area Derby. With Bay Area, her team finished 3rd at the WFTDA International Championships in both 2013 and 2014. During the 2014 WFTDA Playoffs in Salt Lake City, Bricktator received the honour of Tournament MVP. In 2015, she joined Arch Rival Roller Derby and captained the team as they improved their rank from #23 to #10 in one season. Additionally, she is a part of the Radar Labs sponsorship team. She is excited to share her knowledge of jamming, fitness, and positive mindsets during Derby Fest this year (and enjoy an Australian summer!).
